The Kalopanagiotis Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station was established by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research in 1969. It is located on the north side of the Kalopanagiotis Dam and covers an area of 60,000 m2. The first experiments were carried out on the culture of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as well as on other species of the salmonoid family. At the moment, it is the only support infrastructure in Cyprus, both for the preservation of biodiversity and the development of recreational fishing in inland waters (enrichment of dams with freshwater fish species) and for private aquaculture farms through their supply with trout and sturgeon fry.
