The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (Dept of Molecular Genetics, Function and Therapy (MGFT))

GENERAL INFORMATION

Description and purpose of the Research Infrastructure
The mission of the department is to diagnose and study diseases and develop potentially therapeutic strategies against them by using molecular biology and genetic approaches. The department aims to carry out research, services and education in specific biomedical areas in order to achieve its mission in accordance with the wider mission of the CING. The current objectives of the department concentrate mainly in the research of skeletal muscle and the development and application of molecular protocols for the diagnosis of a variety of diseases.

INFORMATION OF INSTRUMENTATION OPERATING IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE

Ultra-centrifuge
  • Name:  Ultra-centrifuge
  • Description:  The Beckman ultracentrifuge separates particles based on their size, shape, and density. Samples are subjected to high centrifugal forces, reaching up to 400,000 x g depending on the rotor used. Available rotors for this ultracentrifuge are the SW41, SW60, and NVT65.
  • Units:  1
  • Hosting Laboratory / Department:  Molecular Genetics, Function and Therapy
Brief description of the utilization of the instrument:
Separation of particles based on their size and density with high acceleration and high speeds.
Year:  2007
Funding Source:
  • National

Flow cytometer
  • Name:  Flow cytometer
  • Description:  The Cytek flow cytometer analyses cells or nanoparticles by measuring their physical and chemical characteristics. Samples are suspended in a fluid stream and passed one by one through violet and blue laser beams. The instrument detects scattered light and fluorescence, providing information on cell/particle size, quantity, and the expression of specific proteins or other molecules.
  • Units:  1
  • Hosting Laboratory / Department:  Molecular Genetics, Function and Therapy
Brief description of the utilization of the instrument:
Detection and measurements of physical and chemical characteristics of cells or nanoparticles.

Fluorescent microscope with time-lapse
  • Name:  Fluorescent microscope with time-lapse
  • Description:  The ZEISS microscope allows for the visualization of specific structures in cells using both fluorescense and brightfield microscopy. The integrated time-lapse feature enables the capture of images over time in either fluorescence or brighfield mode, allowing for the study of dynamic processes. Objectives availables for use are 5X, 10X, 20X, 40X (oil), 63X (oil) and 100X (oil). Image acquisition and analysis are controlled using ZEN 3.1 Pro blue edition software.
  • Units:  1
  • Hosting Laboratory / Department:  Molecular Genetics, Function and Therapy
Brief description of the utilization of the instrument:
Visualization of specific structures in cells using fluorescent dyes. Time-lapse function allows to observe and record dynamic biological events in detail.

Automatic fraction collector
  • Name:  Automatic fraction collector
  • Description:  The IZON AFC (Automatic Fraction Collector) automates the collection of fractions of a sample following column chromatography. It separates the sample's molecules in fractions based on their size, with later fractions containing progressively smaller particles. The IZON AFC is compatible only with the IZON columns (qEV columns).
  • Units:  1
  • Hosting Laboratory / Department:  Molecular Genetics, Function and Therapy
Brief description of the utilization of the instrument:
Automatic separation and collection of fractions during extracellular vesicle isolation.
Year:  2021
