CMMI - Cyrpus Marine and Maritime Institute

GENERAL INFORMATION

Description and purpose of the Research Infrastructure
CMMI was established in April 2019. It is a Centre of Excellence for marine and maritime research, innovation and technology development. It is based in the city of Larnaca in Cyprus. CMMI has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme and matching funding from the Cyprus Government. The Institute’s vision is to drive sustainable Blue Growth, by addressing the needs of industrial and societal blue economy stakeholders. Under the Institute, there are ten Research and Innovation Centres that are involved in marine technology, marine robotics, maritime digitalisation, marine observation, marine and coastal ecosystems, marine biotechnology and aquaculture, the maritime human element, marine cultural heritage, marine and maritime policies and regional cooperation. CMMI’s Scientific staff is already involved in significant projects that will create solutions to issues that concern both the industry and society, such as addressing decarbonisation, protecting and restoring marine biodiversity, preventing and eliminating pollution, building a digital knowledge system of the ocean and attracting, developing and retaining the blue economy workforce. They have expertise in various areas, including naval architecture, marine and electrical engineering, aquaculture and marine resource management, oceanography, marine sciences, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Ayia Napa buoy
  • Name:  Ayia Napa buoy
  • Description:  The buoy is the result of a collaboration between CMMI and two universities in the United States, Old Dominion University and East Carolina University. Its purpose is to understand oceanographic parameters, raise awareness of marine conditions, and prevent and reduce marine pollution. The buoy measures the seawater’s salinity, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and air and water temperatures. The data will be publicly available. The aim of this project is to contribute to marine observation, the exchange of marine environmental data (open source, FAIR data principles), and to gain relevant expertise. The project has a significant impact on the scientific community, education/academia, and Cyprus Authorities, where it contributes to the knowledge and understanding of our ocean through monitoring the properties and behaviour of the Cyprus marine environment.

Tide gauge
  • Name:  Tide gauge
  • Description:  Larnaka has been designated as a vulnerable coastal area due to the low height of many local areas. Therefore, the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus has chosen to develop the pilot on high-resolution inundation-evacuation maps for the city of Larnaca in the framework of IOC-CoastWAVE. The municipality of Larnaka has assigned CMMI as its representative to the National Tsunami Ready Board. CMMI will receive a tide gauge (Inexpensive Device for Sea Level measurements – IDSL) and siren and will be responsible for its installation and maintenance. Moreover, CMMI will contribute to the development of Tsunami Evacuation Maps, Tsunami Response Plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and the annual Tsunami Exercises. Furthermore, CMMI will actively participate in the workshops for public information and awareness but also in the placement of the road signs for Tsunami Hazard Zones and the designated evacuation locations.
