GENERAL INFORMATION

Description and purpose of the Research Infrastructure
CARE-C is a regional European Center of Excellence for Climate and Atmosphere Research, based in Cyprus, for the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region. CARE-C is focused on addressing urgent climate change and air pollution challenges and impacts in the EMME, which has been recognized as a global climate change “hotspot”. The Center was established in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners: the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz in Germany, the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in France, and the University of Helsinki (UHEL) in Finland. CARE-C hosts the following laboratories: - The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL): offers on-site facilities and related infrastructure for research, development, and testing of technologies related to UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The USRL designs, develops and operates bespoke UAS for demanding applications in diverse environments. - Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory:provides high quality atmospheric measurements with respect to gas and particulate pollution as well as greenhouse gases. Informs the public on atmospheric pollution and raise awareness on pollution. - Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL): provides advanced environmental chemical analysis services to the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center or other Research Centers of the Cyprus Institute, as well as other national and international academic and research communities, along with selected contacts in public and private sectors. - Instrumentation and Nanotechnology Laboratory: develops advanced sensing technologies for novel environmental applicatoins.The tools developed in the lab range from advanced instruments for measuring the physical and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, to novel nanomaterials for gas sensors.
