The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (Cancer Genetis, Therapeutics and Ultrastructural Pathology Department)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Description and purpose of the Research Infrastructure

Mission: The mission of the Cancer Genetics, Therapeutics and Ultrastructural Pathology department is to serve the three pillars of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics namely diagnostic services, research and education by i) molecular and ultrastructural diagnostic testing of various types of cancers as well as other neuromuscular, kidney and ciliary diseases respectively, ii) conducting cutting edge research on cancer therapeutics and iii) training the next generation of researchers in the field of cancer genetics and therapeutics.

Objective: Cancer Genetics, Therapeutics and Ultrastructural Pathology department's main objective is to become a centre of excellence, in Cyprus and worldwide, for the: i) molecular testing in diagnosing genetic cancer predisposition as well as detecting somatic mutations for serving as targets towards personalized therapy; and ii) ultrastructural diagnostic testing of neuromuscular, kidney and ciliary diseases by operating the only Transmission Electron Microscope available in Cyprus. Furthermore, the Department aims to conduct clinical and basic research in cancer genetics and therapeutics as evident by a number of peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international scientific journals.
